Netball nationals in Matale Feb 24 to 26 by Leslie Fernando Twice postponed Netball Nationals will now be staged at Bernard Aluvihare Stadium, Matale from February 24 to 26. The championship is conducted by the Netball Federation of Sri Lanka and all proceeds will be for the tsunami disaster fund. Ms. Yasmin Dharmaratne, Secretary' Netball Federation of Sri Lanka said that the tourney earlier to be held in Hambantota but was cancelled due to tidal wave disaster. This year's nationals will be a fund raising one. A 'gate' will be charged for all matches and all donations and sponsorship monies will be for the tsunami fund. Over 16 teams are expected to participate and the matches will be played on a league basis. The teams will be grouped into four. The winner and runner-up in each group will play on criss-cross basis to find the champion and runners-up. The champions will be presented the NFSL Challenge Trophy and the runners-up a trophy. There will be special awards for the best shooter, best centre court player, most disciplined team. Netball Queen will also be selected and prizes will be awarded. It is most unlikely that the mixed netball tournament will be worked off along with the nationals. Fifteen former National netball captains donated women's clothing and other women's wear at a simple ceremony held at Temple Trees on Monday. The items were handed over to Ms. Shirani Rajapakse, President of Netball Federation of Sri Lanka. These items will be for tsunami victims at Hambantota said Ms. Dharmaratne. |
