ADB to lend 180m $ to Bangladesh for flood rehabilitation MANILA, Saturday (AFP) The Asian Development Bank (ADB) said Saturday it would lend 180 million dollars to Bangladesh for rehabilitation following the devastating floods which hit that country in June. The ADB loan, made in coordination with an assessment of damage by the World Bank and the ADB in September, would focus on rehabilitating public infrastructure in priority areas. This would include rural infrastructure, roads, railways, water resources, and municipal infrastructure, the ADB said in a statement from its headquarters in the Philippine capital. In addition, the loan would also strengthen the government's disaster preparedness by adopting flood-resistant infrastructure design standards and helping enhance existing early warning systems, the ADB added. A technical assistance grant of 150,000 dollars for financial management and monitoring would accompany the loan while another grant of 250,000 dollars was also approved for a study on the early warning systems. The floods that hit Bangladesh in June, 2004 adversely affected 36 million people, or about 25 percent of the population, the ADB noted. |
