Norwegians discuss common relief mechanism with LTTE by Ananth Palakidnar The Norwegian Ambassador Hans Brakstarr and the acting chief of the Sri Lanka Monitoring Mission Wagen Winkel held discussions with LTTE's political chief S.P. Thamilselvan an issue of setting up a common mechanism to re-build the Tsunami devastated North and East. The talks were held at the LTTE's Peace Secretariat in Kilinochchi yesterday. The LTTE had already presented a proposal to the Government to set up an apex body in Colombo with three representatives from Sinhala, Tamil and Muslim communities along with an eleven member council comprising six Tamils, three Muslims and two Sinhalese in the North and East to look into the grievances of the victims. According to reports the Norwegian envoy Hans Brakstarr had conveyed the Government's view on the LTTE's suggestions and the issue was discussed extensively with the LTTE's political head and other senior members. Informed sources said that something could be expected positively with regard to the cooperation between the Government and the LTTE with regard to the relief measures in the near future. Meanwhile the senior Tamil National Alliance Parliamentarian from the East Joseph Pararajasingham told the Sunday Observer that the relief measures were moving at a snails pace and nothing was happening constructively in the North and East."Relief assistance is not reaching the victims at a regular pace and a large number of people are still without proper food or medicine" Pararajasingham said. |
