Thuhashini wins 'Player of the Year' award by Lal Gunesekera Sri Lanka's former amateur champion, Thuhashini Selvaratnam, who is now attached to the Arizone State Golf Association (ASGA) in the USA, was adjudged the 'Player of the Year' in 2004, which award she has been winning for the past five consecutive years since 2000. The presentation was made last month. Last year, she reached the semi-finals of the 18th US Mid Amateur Championships at Hills Golf Club in Knoxville, Tennessee, and also the State Amateur Championship for three consecutive years. She also won the Club Championship of the Desert Hill Golf Club in Arizona and has also won its Stroke-Play title since 2000 too. During a short vacation in Sri Lanka in December-January, Thuhashini, broke her own course record at the Royal Colombo Golf Club (RCGC) with a gross 67 during trials for the forthcoming Queen Sirikit Cup Golf Championship. She held the earlier course record with a gross 69. Before leaving for the USA, Thuhashini, who could be described as the best women's golfer produced in this country after Tiru Jesudasan (nee Fernando) who fared exceptionally well on the Professional Circuit, won seven national titles in the 1999-2000 which included the Sri Lanka amateur for the third time, Singapore Open, Hong Kong Open, China Open, Thailand Open, All-India Open and the Emirates Open, while being the runner-up at the Malaysian Open. |
