Appeals for release of journalists held in Iraq Saturday, (AFP) President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono and the mother of one of two Indonesian journalists being held hostage in Iraq made public and emotional appeals Saturday for their safe release. The two were snatched on their way from Jordan to Iraq during the week and were paraded on the Al-Jazeera satellite television network by gunmen demanding Jakarta explain their presence in the conflict-ridden country. "They are only carrying out their journalistic work and therefore I, on behalf of the Indonesian people, appeal for the release of the two journalists immediately so they can return home to Indonesia," Yudhoyono said. In a hastily-convened press conference in the early hours of Saturday, shortly after footage of the two was aired on Qatar-based Al-Jazeera, Yudhoyono said the pair had no political agenda. "The two journalists are truly only carrying out their journalistic duties... There is no political involvement. There is no involvement by the two in the conflict," he said.
