Palestinian official for new truce talks CAIRO, Feb 25 (AFP) - Palestinian national security advisor Jibril Rajub arrived in Cairo Friday amid reports of a renewed effort by the leadership to cement an informal truce by militant groups into a permanent ceasefire. Egyptian media said fresh talks with the main armed factions were expected to open early next month as Palestinian leader Mahmud Abbas intensifies efforts to win acceptance of a mututal ceasefire he announced with Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon at a breakthrough summit earlier this month. Egypt, which regards itself as the leading Arab peace-broker, has hosted a series of such meetings in the past and has also provided training for Palestinian security personnel tasked with halting militant activity in the Gaza Strip as Israel prepares for a unilateral withdrawal later this year. Meanwhile, Palestinian leader Mahmud Abbas, called an emergency meeting of his top security officials Saturday after a suicide bombing in Tel Aviv which killed three Israelis, a top Palestinian official said. The new interior minister Nasr Yussuf, civil affairs minister Mohammed Dahlan and the heads of the various security branches would attend the meeting at his offices in Ramallah, chief Palestinian negotiator Saeb Erakat said. "They will examine the measures to be taken after the bombing in Tel Aviv," Erakat told AFP |
