Muttiah Muralitharan : Everything but cricket
Is he romantic? In a weirdly wacky interview (the process of arranging which seemed like a two-step-forward one-step-back hoe-down) intrepid reporter Rikaza Hassen gets him to answer some questions, you may have always wanted to ask but couldn't because....well because he's Muttiah Muralitharan, superstar cricketer, safeguarded from the plebs and their inquisitive probing by Minders and Managers galore. A: Life is beautiful. Q: What is your take on life? A: You get only one chance, so I think that you have to live it the way you want. Q: We've got used to knowing you as a bachelor, why the sudden decision to get married? A: Every man goes through stages, there is an age when he has his fun and then he settles down. Q: What do you think about your fiancee? A: She's good. Q: Is that all you can say about her? A: 've known her only for two months. Q: Is this an arranged marriage? A: Yes. Q: So when are you getting married and where? A: March 21st in India. Q: How long are you planning to stay there? A: Well I've got a match in New Zealand on the 24th and if I'm picked, I'll be playing for it. Q: Once you get married is she coming to Sri Lanka to stay? A: Why else would I get married. Q: You were in India on Valentine's Day. How did you spend your day? A: You're not supposed to know I was in India, you cannot ask me questions like that. Q: If you don't want to answer the question please say so. A: How do you know I was in India? Q: I am a journalist. It's my job to know these things. A: I don't believe in a special valentine's day. I didn't celebrate or do anything special. Q: What is your greatest strength? A: Self-belief. Q: What is your greatest weakness? A: I believe in myself so I can overcome anything. Q: Who is the most important person in your life? A: My parents. Q: You are known to be a 'mama's boy'. Would you agree? A: No. I mean I love my mother but I make my own decisions. Q: How did it feel to escape the tsunami, have a close call? A: It wasn't a close call. We were driving there,they told us what had happened and we turned back. Q: Did you feel relief at having escaped, felt lucky to be alive? A: No, I didn't feel anything like that. Everyone has a time to go and if it was my time I would have gone. It wasn't my time so I escaped. Q: Tell us about your charity work. A: Kushil Guneskeera, me and Vaas are involved. It's not a big fund, we don't have much money. Q: What sort of work do you do usually? A: It's not a big fund so we can't do much. Q: You have had problems with Shane Warne in the past and now you are friends. How did that come about? A: Who said I have problems with Warne? Q: Warne himself has said that he used to have problems with you but not anymore. A: You're lying. Q: So you have no problems with Warne or any of the Aussies? A: No.
