Norway tanker blaze under control OSLO, Saturday, The 28-strong crew of a Norwegian oil tanker put out a blaze aboard the vessel on Friday off south Norway, averting a risky night-time helicopter evacuation. "The captain says that the situation has been brought under control," Anders Bang-Andersen of the Joint Rescue Centre in south Norway told Reuters. "We're no longer talking of evacuating the crew." He said that there were no reports of injuries in the fire, which broke out in the machine room of the Norwegian-owned Fjord Champion about 15 nautical miles off the southern tip of Norway. The 170-metre long tanker had been empty except for its own fuel. Reasons for the blaze were unknown. Some other vessels in the area, initially asked to be on standby to help evacuate the crew if needed, were told to continue their voyages, Bang-Andersen said. One of two helicopters sent from the mainland would stay nearby for an hour or so. NRK television said that the Fjord Champion was owned by Norwegian Champion Shipping. Norway is the world's number three oil exporter behind Saudi Arabia and Russia. |
