Chaotic scenes over state politics force Indian parliament to adjourn Saturday, India's parliament broke up in chaos for a third day Friday following the controversial appointment of a government allied to the ruling national Congress party in the tiny eastern state of Jharkhand. Livid opposition MPs bellowed for the dismissal of the state's governor after he asked Congress allies to form a government following a state election in which they won fewer seats than the Hindu nationalists and their partners. Critics say the affair has tarnished the image of Congress, India's oldest political party, which pledged clean rule when it ousted the Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) at national elections in the world's largest democracy last May. Late on Friday evening, the federal cabinet sacked the government and imposed president's rule in the western tourist state of Goa where the Congress party's role in hastily forming a government has also come in for criticism. In the latest developments in Goa before the sacking, Congress had sought a vote of confidence in the state assembly. Despite a 16-16 tie, the assembly speaker declared Congress the winner after taking into account the vote of the protem speaker and ignoring the vote of an opposition legislator, television reports said. |
