Lanka's software goes for lion logo by Elmo Leonard Akin to Ceylon tea carrying the lion-and-sword logo, Sri Lanka's software industry will now bear the lion logo, with the words, Software Sri Lanka - elaborate solutions delivered. This software logo will also carry the email address: www.SoftwareSriLanka.com. This is the strategy of the Software Exporters Association (SEA) together with Sri Lanka Association for the Software Industry (SLASI) in its bid to brand identify Sri Lanka's software industry. Chairman of SEA Jayantha de Silva said that this was part of a long term strategy to build upon the capabilities of the Sri Lanka software industry. Also, to establish quality standards and develop usage criteria while building awareness among the local decision makers of the potential the software industry bears. The software industry has projections of exporting software exceeding $1 billion by year 2012 from $74 million netted in 2004. Today 20,000 people are employed in the local software industry and projections are that the industry will hold 40,000 persons in 2017. SEA consists of over 40 member companies and comes under the patronage of the Sri Lanka Export Development Board (EDB), the Board of Investment (BOI) and the Information Communication Technology Agency (ICTA). De Silva explained at the launch that the new logo will also be an initiative to showcase Sri Lanka to the investment community as a location for quality software development and to the international software industry as a source of quality off-shore development and software products. Already, Sri Lankans had innovated and produced some of the most unique software in the world, it was made out at the launch. Sri Lankan ICT companies had several success stories under their belt, having undertaken high profile overseas projects. In addition Sri Lanka has highly skilled personnel and international companies should be encouraged to invest here and to develop partnerships with local companies. Inspite of Sri Lanka's success, very little is known by the decision makers, De Silva said. An exhibition of Sri Lanka's ICT sector was held in Colombo, at the launch. |
