Sri Lankan Economy book launch by Rohan Mathes Merit sans ethics is a recipe for disaster and a huge menace to society, said Foreign Affairs Minister Lakshman Kadirgamar at the launch of his book on the 'Sri Lankan Economy', at the Taj last week. Minister Kadirgamar, the chief guest stressed the importance of Universities developing and grooming national leaders without merely turning out people for jobs. "Universities should produce business leaders who are sensitive to the disparities of the world they live in, especially the developing world. They must have the will and the desire to pump in something substantial to their societies and mankind at large", he said. Kadirgamar said that education should have a holistic approach instead of being fragmented and should relate to the real world. He commended the opening of the ICFAI University in Sri Lanka as a step in the right direction in building bonds between the academics of India and Sri Lanka. Sri Lanka's High Commissioner in India Mangala Moonesinghe commenting on the opening of the ICFAI University here said that the establishment of the ICFAI University would reduce the snowballing effect on the students who were deprived of having a higher education, despite their capacity for it. The "ICFAI University will expand its operations by having an Engineering faculty and a full fledged Campus here soon", he said. Deputy Indian High Commissioner in Sri Lanka, Mohan Kumar also spoke. |
