Role of Accountants stressed

by Hiran H. Senewiratne

The role of the accountant is vital to promote growth, efficiency and transparency not only in the private sector but also in the public sector, Finance Minister Dr. Sarath Amunugama said.

"Accountants are high on the list among other professions in the country and their contribution is necessary to create efficiency, transparency and accountability in any organisation."

He was speaking on 'Sustainable Reporting 2004' at the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA) Awards ceremony. Ceylon Tobacco Company was the overall winner at the event.

The Minister said that accountants can play a vital role to make any organisation more transparent, free from corruption and efficient especially the public sector organisations.

Today the entire public sector needs to be reexamined and restructured to make them more efficient, transparent and free from corruption to be competitive.

The Minister said that sustainability is not only about community service but also about creating a sustainable environment for the entire nation.

"What we see now is a public-private sector partnership in creating this sustainable environment, but the private sector has taken the initiative to re-instate the livelihoods that have been lost in the tsunami," Dr. Amunugama said.

The government has always espoused a healthy mix of SMEs with large corporates because the country's economic development at grassroots level can only be achieved by promoting sustainable development to all corners of the country, he said.

The Minister said that there is no doubt that business must be profit making entities as they do have a responsibility towards their shareholders and at the same time, business must be conducted in a transparent and responsible manner, which does not harm the environment nor its stakeholders.

He also said that Sri Lanka is slowly moving towards the idea of being stakeholder friendly and found that the influence of multinationals has played a key role in increasing this awareness.
