30th 'Battle of Kotte' :

Arosha hits century in drawn game

by Ranjan Anandappa

An improved batting display by Sri Jayewardenapura MV helped them to draw their 30th annual 'big match' against St. Thomas' College, Kotte which ended at the P. Sara Stadium yesterday.

Jayewardenapura, MV who were shot out for 94 in their first innings, batted with responsibility to end the day at 179 for 2 wickets, needing 181 runs to make the Kotte Thomians bat again.

There were some good individual performances by players of either side. Thomian skipper Arosha Perera hit a useful 103 to bolster his side to 275 after being 146 for 6 overnight. They were 84 for 6 at one stage, but Arosha Perera who was engaged in two useful stands, one with Oshadie Serasinghe (51) added 96 runs for the seventh-wicket and the other with Suresh Indrajith (38) added a further 71 for the ninth wicket.

The 'Thomians had' a vital '181-run' first innings lead. Serasinghe also took 7 for 17 runs in the first innings.

SJMV in their second essay went to bat with a defecit of 181 around 1 p.m. and they were inspired by an unseperated third-wicket stand by Kanishka Perera 82 n.o. and Damith Gayan 59 n.o. When the mandatory overs began, SJMV were 94 for 2, still in danger, but the stuborn third-wicket pair salvaged them with an attacking stand of 96-runs.
