Mayurathan century helps Johnians to stay in front

by Selvarajah Ramesh in Jaffna

A fine century by A. Mayurathan (122) helped St. John's Jaffna to rattle up 248 in their first innings of the 99th big cricket encounter against Jaffna Central at the Central grounds.

After the first innings total that they got, St. John's Jaffna did well to dismiss Jaffna Central for 156 runs in their first innings to have a stranglehold of the match.

However, Jaffna Central in a 'never say die' effort did not lose heart and with a vigorous display of forceful cricket grabbed three second innings wickets of St. John's for 27 runs to somewhat even things up.

In the St. John's second innings, Dinesh was out for 5 runs, P. Neshavarman for 4 runs and vice-captain A. Anpujan for 11 runs.

Right now, St. John's enjoy a lead of 119 runs with seven second innings wickets intact and an interesting final day's play awaits the large and enthusiastic crowd of spectators who were present on the first two days of this encounter.
