Political future in President's hands by Rohan Mathes Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapakse asserts that the political future of the country lies in the hands of President Chandrika Kumaratunga and the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP). In an exclusive interview to the Sunday Observer at Temple Trees, the Premier pointed out that there was no political uncertainty in the country and no need to panic. "The holding of a Referendum, a Presidential Election or 'Change of Constitution' depends on the decision taken by President Chandrika Kumaratunga and the Party. We have to change the Constitution. We pledged it to the people in 1994, but failed to fulfil it to date. So we must change the Constitution even at this last stage", he noted. He said that the destiny of the country and the future of all politicians including himself, rests with the people and not solely on the "Horoscopes" of individual politicians, as some perceive. " The power of the people and their aspirations are the decisive factors. The people possess the right to elect politicians to power or otherwise", he claimed. Referring to the UPFA marking their first anniversary in power this week, Rajapakse outlined their achievements during the past year, as pledged in their 'Rata Perata' manifesto, such as graduate employment scheme, 'Dahasak Vev' project, 'Maga Neguma', 'Nanna Salla' and 'Ruhuna Aruna' among others.(RM) |
