Post tsunami reconstruction strategy

by Rohan Mathes

The Development Forum 2005 on post tsunami re-construction activities and new high-growth poverty reduction strategies within the government policy framework, will be held in Kandy on May 16 and 17, Finance Ministry Secretary Dr. P. B. Jayasundera said.

Dr. Jayasundera told a press conference on Wednesday at the Finance Ministry auditorium that the Forum will provide the government an opportunity to review the development performance and restructuring activities taking place in the post-tsunami and post conflict re-habilitation/re-construction in the North East as well as the post tsunami re-construction work in the South and the Western Province.

The government will also launch the 'Millennium Development Goals' country report 2005, in which the government has outlined how the government proposes to address the goals and challenges adopted by the UN for the country."

He said that there would be wide participation at the highest level by multilateral and bilateral agencies. It would be the first forum to be held outside the capital city.

One of the main topics selected for discussion would be on 'Consolidated post tsunami re-construction strategy', further divided into ten subsectors, education, health, fisheries, tourism, growth, railways, environment, tsunami disaster management, water supply and sanitation.

They will also touch on national poverty reduction and economic growth strategies, particularly in respect of new institutional development such as the Strategic Enterprise Management Agency (SEMA) reforms among others.

"We think the country has entered the middle-income status with the 2004 economic performance. It has passed the 1,000 dollar per capita benchmark, he said.
