Funds cannot go missing - Tittawella

by Chamitha Kuruppu and Rikaza Hassan

A top government official and a Senior Economic Advisor to the President last week denied allegations made by the Opposition Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe that one billion rupees of tsunami donor funds had gone missing. According to Task Force For Rebuilding The Nation (TAFREN) Chairman Mano Tittawella the government does not interfere with tsunami aid. Tittawella stressed that donor funds couldnot 'go missing' as Wickremesinghe claimed and added that utilization of money was audited and was open for public perusal.

TAFREN chief says the government is engaged only in the acquisition of suitable land for reconstruction beyond the buffer zones. It will, however, not be playing any role whatsoever in the construction of houses. Therefore allegations of mishandling tsunami funds especially in the area of reconstruction will be unjustifiable.
