More housing projects for tsunami victims

by Ananda Kannangara

Two leading donor organisations from Austria and Germany on Thursday undertook a massive housing construction project for the benefit of 150 tsunami victimised families in the Southern coastal belt. Public Administration and Home Affairs Minister Amarasiri Dodangoda accepted the donation on behalf of the Government.

According to the program these two organisations are expected to construct 150 permanent houses to the value of Rs. 2 lakhs each in Hikkaduwa, Habaraduwa and Telwatta.

It was also revealed that these organisations had earlier constructed 200 housing units at Telwatta to the value of Rs. 230,000 each.

The construction work of these housing units is carried out by a local construction firm under the supervision of these two donor organisations. Speaking on the occasion Minister Dodangoda thanked the project coordinator Ms. Ursula Saleh-Topitz and other members of the donor organisations, Mr. George Bittner and Rolf Gellwoiler for the kind gesture shown towards the victimised families at this crucial moment.

He said the Government had already identified 1483 tsunami victimised families living between Hikkaduwa and Ambalangoda coastal belt and pledged that all these families would be provided with new permanent houses along with furniture and kitchen utensils before the end of this year.

"According to the Government's already commenced construction program for tsunami victims, people whose houses were located close proximity to the sea shore would be provided with tents and those who lived within 100 metres would be provided with houses made of wood until all victims be given permanent houses in the buffer zone," he said.

Minister Dodangoda also thanked the members of the two organisations to install water purification plants at Telwatta.

Ven. Elle Gunawansa Thera who was also present on the occasion said that almost all Buddhist temples in the Southern districts helped tsunami victims irrespective of their caste, creed or religion during the disaster period and thanked the two donor organisations for the already constructed 200 housing units for needy families.
