Helping the tsunami hit fisherfolk : President hails Navy efforts by Ananth Palakidnar The Sri Lanka Navy engineers had proved that they were not only capable of handling the warships but were also good at producing fishing vessels for civilian purposes. This was stated by President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga when she handed over the fishing vessels manufactured by the Sri Lanka Naval engineers to the fisherfolk affected by tsunami.President Kumaratunga handed over the fishing boats produced by the Navy to Sinhala, Tamil and Muslim fisher families who were affected by tsunami at the Navy's Gemunu base at Welisara on Wednesday. Sri Lanka Navy undertook the project of making 1000 fibreglass dingy fishing boats initiated by the Government. 60 boats had been produced by the end of April and the production rate is expected to be around 150 boats per month according to the Naval engineers. President accompanied by the Chief of Defence Staff and the Commander of the Navy Vice Admiral D. W. K. Sandagiri and Director General of the Navy engineering division, handed over the newly built boats to the tsunami hit fisher families and praised the Navy's efforts in dedicating itself in helping the poor fisherfolk. Along with each fibreglass boat, a new outboard engine also provided to the fishermen who received the boats. |
