At the 7th Annual global Non-violence Conference, held in Detroit, Michigan, USA on April 17, Dr. A. T. Ariyaratne, President of the Lanka Jatika Sarvodaya Shramadana Sangamaya was cited to receive the Global Peace Award in recognition of his efforts for the "accomplishment of promoting the principles of sharing, compassion, self-efficiency, constructive action, truthful communication, equality, democracy and community in Sri Lanka."

As Dr. Ariyaratne was unable to attend this year's Annual Global Non-violence Conference due to unforeseen circumstances such as the tsunami disaster, Mr. David Capraro, a Director of Sarvodaya USA Board accepted the award on behalf of Dr. Ariyaratne.
