Progress in health sector by Jayantha Sri Nissanka A sound progress has recorded in the reconstruction of the Tsunami devastated health sector projects. The Ministry of Health has signed 32 Memorandum of Understanding (MoUs) to rebuild Tsunami devastated hospitals and improve health sector facilities, Minister Nimal Siripala de Silva told the Sunday Observer. Reconstruction of Tsunami devastated Kinniya hospital has been commenced within a short period with donor assistance, he said. The Kinniya hospital was completely destroyed on December 26. In addition another 71 hospitals, 149 peripheral units and 363 mental and health care clinics, Central dispensaries and heath offices were damaged. However, the Action Plan has estimated that around Rs.10 billion (US$100 Mn) need to complete the Tsunami Health projects.Minister noted that the health sector was able to control out break of disease and was able to prevent deaths due to lack of medical care soon after the tidal wave attack. Minister Silva said that reconstruction work on Tsunami projects are going on smoothly and he expects that designed projects will be completed in schedule time with donor assistance and monitoring. |
