Political commitment to rid society of bribery commendable - Weliamuna

by Deepal Warnakulasuriya

"Bribery in school admissions has been taking place on a large scale in the country for a long time and we have no political commitment to look into such issues. The Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption was there but it had not been fully set up till last month. In such a situation, President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga's initiative to curb the situation should be welcomed. she is purely trimming the school admission procedure."

Well known lawyer J.C.Weliamuna made these observations at an exclusive interview with the `Sunday Observer' last week commenting on the Presidential Investigating Unit (PIU)'s moves to investigate bribery and corruption in school admissions. However, he also added while the purpose was right, the implementation methodology should also consider constitutional values.

He also noted that the Education Ministry's challenge of the Public Service Commission (PSC) as a joke because one government institute was going against another government institute. "Public Service Commission is set up as an independent body to prevent political interference in government institutes.

Therefore, it should be left alone", he added. The Ministry had challenged the PSC order to reinstate the two principals of Ananda College, Colombo and Kingswood College, Kandy with immediate effect. These two Principals had been interdicted by the Education Ministry Secretary following reports by the PIU that bared malpractices or irregularities relating to Grade 1 admissions for 2005.

Weliamuna also stressed that a society free from bribery and corruption was one wish of every citizen of this country. "Therefore, every institution as well as every citizen should be careful and respectful to work within the framework of the Constitution", he added.
