CEB restores power supply to tsunami hit coastal belt

Ceylon Electricity Board is on the verge of completing restoration of power supply to the entire coastal belt that was affected by tsunami, with emerging prospects of JIBC loan of over Rs. 2b to upgrade the power sector of the country.

According to a senior official, the CEB has restored electricity to the whole of the affected coastal belt except for small pockets in the Eastern province.

The delay was mainly due to difficulties in taking machineries to the areas concerned, transportation was difficult and we have such other trivial difficulties which would be looked into shortly, the official explained.

"We have restored electricity to almost all areas that were affected by tsunami," he said. "We are waiting till the temporary and permanent houses are set up to provide electricity," he said. Loss of assets due to tsunami was estimated to be around Rs. 1.2 b. Referring to the JIBC loan he said, the Government was to get the loan on soft terms but on which terms the Government would re-lend money to the CEB was yet at discussion level. (RS)
