IMF values Lankan compensation packages

by Ananda Kannangara

The International Monetary fund (IMF) on Friday highly appreciated various worker compensation schemes currently existing in Sri Lanka and said that this nature of worker friendly compensation schemes have immensely benefited to minimize work stoppages and strikes at work places to a greater extent.

"A recent research, conducted by us has indicated that employees in the Sri Lankan private sector reap more benefits from compensation schemes in comparison to all other existing compensation schemes in several other Asian countries," IMF, Senior Resident Representative Luis M Valdivieso said.

He made these remarks to Labour Relations and Foreign Employment Minister Athauda Seneviratna when he met the latter at an official meeting at the Labour Secretariat, Narahenpita. Asian Pacific Region, Advisor Thomas R. Rumbaugh was also present.

Referring to the remarks made by the IMF representatives, Minister Seneviratna highlighted that the close rapport the Government always maintains with trade unions as well as employers to discuss their employment problems and grievances has helped to minimise strikes.

When Minister Seneviratna informed the IMF officials that plenty of vacancies are available in the plantation and the garment sectors in Sri Lanka at present, they were amazed and inquired why Lankan youth still go after foreign employment.
