PM wants all-rounders

by Rohan Mathes reporting from Hambantota

Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapakse urges parents to encourage their children to take part in extra curricular activities as well, without limiting only to books.

Participating as the chief guest at the opening of a new science laboratory at the Walgammulla Maha Vidyalaya in Kirama, Hambantota, the Premier said, "Children should not confine themselves only to school books but should engage and excel in other activities such as sports, which would teach them not only to seek victory but take up defeat as well."

"In the past, Hambantota district has just been one before the last but one in the merit list of education standards indices. This has to change." Hambantota students too should be in a level playing field with their students from Colombo schools, both in facilities and merit achievements. Computer literacy too which is around two percent in the Hambantota district should be enhanced to enable them to be well equipped and prepared for the future global trends in IT. The establishment of e-libraries was an initial step taken in this sphere to obtain relevant and vital information from the internet.

He expressed his concern on the deteriorating standards of Maths and Science in schools including Hambantota and urged all those concerned to take necessary steps in rectifying and improving the standards.

Rajapakse added that with all the love and affection of parents to their offsprings during their tender age, there has been a tendency for the parents to neglect them at a later stage by shifting the responsibility to the schools and the teachers.

He opined that this was a dangerous trend for children and the society at large and appealed to the parents to refrain from palming off their due responsibilities towards their children in such an irresponsible manner.
