Ranil plays spoiler by Anura Maitipe With the rejection of an invitation offered by President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga to discuss the proposed Post-tsunami Operational Structure, the selfish behaviour of the UNP leadership Ranil Wickremasinghe has been exposed, Post and Telecommunication Minister D.M. Jayaratne told "Sunday Observer". Now his prime concern is the next presidential election, Minister Jayaratne said. He added," A few months ago both the UNP leader and his learned professor were highly vociferous over non implementation of the ISGA that was proposed by the LTTE. But now both of them make no comment about the Post-tsunami Operational Management Structure. Wickremasinghe is the most unethical leader the UNP has ever had in its political history. If he was a genuine in his attitude this is an ideal opportunity for him to display his party position on the simmering national question. His evasive behaviour on national issues is a great insult not only to the late UNP leaders but also to those who had kept national issues above party politics. For instance, at the time of the Srima-Shastri Pact was on the table the then Prime Minister Sirimavo Bandaranaike sought the support of the then Opposition Leader Dudley Senanayake. As a true statesman he cooperated to solve the issue. On another occasion when the Kachchativu Island issue came up the then PM Dudley Senanayake again helped Mrs. Bandaranaike to sort out the issue. |
