Prays for UNP return Colombo District Parliamentarian T. Maheswaran was very anxious to have his party return to power as early as possible. Speaking at the 15th anniversary of the Old Moor Street Trader's Association, Maheswaran appealed the gathering to pray for the return of the ``glorious 17-year rule of the UNP," shortly, in spite of the fact the leaders of the Association said that they would support and cooperate with any government that was in power. In fact he was referring to the JR, Premadsasa governments that ruled the country from 1977. What happened during those 17 years were not forgotten by the people. The Executive Presidential System introduced by J. R. Jayawardene in 1978 that robbed the powers of parliament and was the base for unstable governments, July 1980 strike that threw thousands of government employees on to the streets, 1983 pogrom that burnt down hundreds of Tamil people and their businesses, the war imposed on the people of North by J.R. Gardenia and his National Security Minister Lalith Athulathmudali, the state terrorism during the second insurrection of the JVP that killed thousands of youth in the South and many more. Mr. Maheswaran might have forgotten those "glorious 17 years" were the curse of the nation. |
