Trinity, Mahamaya champions by Leslie Fernando Swimmers from Kandy (Trinity and Mahamaya) performed the best to emerge overall boys' and girls' champions respectively at the three-day National Pentathlon Swimming Championships concluded at the Sugathadasa Stadium swimming pool yesterday. Trinity were first while last year's champions Royal finished second and Ananda in third place in the boys section. In the girls overall Mahamaya retained the title while Hillwood were second and Ladies third. The new records were established both by Trinity swimmers. Heshan Unamboowe accounted for the first record in the boys under-14 backstroke 'clocking' 1.09.73 secs. He erased a ten-year mark held by Gihan Ranatunga 1.12.71 secs in 1995. Unamboowe who was the last year's under-14 champion was also the best swimmer in the boys under-14 totallign 6.12.53 secs in all four strokes and in the individual medley. Migara Hulangamuwa set the second record in the boys under-10 individual medley with a time of 3.14.61 secs. He erased off the record held by H. Unamboowe of Trinity 3.14.73 secs. Condrad Francis, a former Josephian and ace Sri Lanka swimmer, a student of Swinburne University, Melbourne, Australia was the chief guest. |
