Madras rowers add colour to Joes Sculling Regatta

For the first time six young rowers, three boys and three girls representing Madras Boat Club, Chennai will participate at the third Joes Sculling Regatta 2005 conducted and hosted by St. Joseph's College to be held from May 25 to 28 on the Beira Waters, CRC, said Rear Admiral Tony Abeyasena, Chairman Rowing Advisory Committee of St. Joseph's College at a briefing held on Wednesday at the Naval Headquarters, Colombo. Admiral Abeyasena added that it will definitely add more colour to the regatta with the participation of six schoolboy rowers.

Three girls R. Fazilla, Gowri Adappa, Natasha Duraiswami will row in four events in the under-13, under-15 and under-19 age groups while the three boys R. Niroop, Ajay Subramanian, B. Atul will participate in five events in the under-15 and under-19 age category. M. R. Ravindra a very popular figure amongst the local rowers who has represented the Madras Boat Club with distinction will accompany the rowers as manager-cum caoch.

Admiral Abeyasena added that rowers from Royal, S. Thomas' College, Ananda, St. Joseph's College, Ladies College, Musaeus College, University of Moratuwa, Navy, Air Force, Old Joes and Colombo Rowing Club will participate at the regatta.

The events to be held are: Boys and girls under-13-sculls (500 metres) under-15 sculls (1000 metres) under-17 and under-19-sculls double sculls, pair and fours (1000 metres). Oarsmen and Oarswomen under-24 and open-sculls, double sculls, pairs, fours. All events will be rowed in the fibreglass sculling boats. The respective institutions are expected to make their own arrangements for boats for training and competition purposes.

The heats of all events will be worked off on May 25, 26, 27 commencing at 2 p.m. on each day. The finals will be on May 28 starting from 1 p.m.

Challenge trophies, medals and certificates will be awarded to the overall champions in the boys and girls under-17 and under-19. Medals and certificates will be awarded to in the under-13, under-15 boys and girls, under-24 and open, oarsmen and oarswomen.

Commander Ravi Weerapperuma, Yohan Thurainayagam, Juhann Corera, Keerthi Nugawala and Rohan Kodipilly were associated at the briefing.
