Sri Lanka - poor showing in junior tennis

Sri Lanka finished eighth out of 17 countries at the Junior Davis Cup sponsored by BNP Paribas (Asia/Oceania qualifying zone) last week in Manila, Philippines. Japan emerged the winners with Australia in second place.

Philippines were third followed by Thailand, China, Chinese Taipei and India, while the other countries that took part were Hong Kong, Uzbekistan, Malaysia, Pakistan, United Arab Emirates (UAE), Indonesia, Singapore, New Zealand and South Korea.

Sri Lanka who were in group II of the stage one in the round-robin managed to beat only Malaysia 3-0, while losing 0-3 to Thailand. Then in stage two of the knock-out, lost to Taipei 0-2 and India 0-2.

The Lankans were represented by Rukmal Cooray, Kohulan Ravindrakumar and Chavi Thalagala with Sylvester Francis as coach cum non-playing captain.

Sri Lanka are also playing in the Junior Federation Cup (Asia/ Oceania qualifying) which is now in progress in Bangkok, Thailand. Playing in group 2 together with Uzbekistan, Chinese Taipei and Hong Kong, the Lankans have lost all ties 0-3 and in the play-off ties from 13th to 15th places will be pitted against Singapore and the Philippines.

The Lankan side comprised Thavindra Ekanayake, Navodi de Zoysa and Hasini Jayatilleke with Neshan Gunasekera as coach cum non-playing captain and Mrs. Victoria Perera as manageress.

Three boys and three girls are now attending a training camp for two days in Melbourne, Australia before competing at the World Juniors Championship also in Melbourne which got under way yesterday (Saturday) and scheduled to end on May 21. The three boys are Indika Wettasinghe, Arvind Fernando and Eshan Jayamanne, while the girls are Jithmi Jayawickreme, Nilupul Gunasekera and Amritha Muttiah with Chrysantha Perera as coach and Ms. Nandini Hewage the manageress.

Meanwhile, the President of the Sri Lanka Tennis Association (SLTA), Suresh Subramaniam, will be attending the annual general meeting of the International Tennis Federation (ITF) at the Prague, Czech Republic from June 15 to 18.
