Binupa, Sidath and Suwaneetha the star golfers in 11th round by S. M. Jiffrey Abdeen - Kandy Sports Correspondent at Rajawella Fifteen year old Binupa Wijesinghe (mens gross division), former national cricketer and selector now turned golfer Sidath Wettimuni (Mens nett division) and Suwaneetha Selvaratnam (Ladies nett division) stole the show at the 11th round of the Lectra Monthly golf competition organised by the Victoria Golf and Country Resort and sponsored by Lectra Apparel Technologies (Pvt.) Limited which was worked off at the Victoria Golf Course at Rajawella. Binupa Wijesinghe a junior national golfer and a student of Wycherly International School, Colombo, who holds much promise for the future found the course much to his liking and carded an excellent 80 gross which assured him the grandprix for this division which is expected to be worked off later. Sidath Wettimuni who got 83 gross took the second slot. Also excelling were Tony Witham (88), Nimal Wettimuni (86), Chamil Wickremasinghe (90) and Srinivas Rao (89). Young Binupa Wijesinghe played to a handicap of 3 while Sidath Wettimuni to a handicap of 7. Sidath Wettimuni using a little of his cricket talents and blending it with his golfing skills came up with a fine 76 to win the title for the Mens nett division. Tony Witham who played to a handicap of 8 too came with a similar score of 76 but on a count back on the last nine holes, Sidath edged out Tony to clinch the title. By a coincidence both are past cricketers. Also excelling in this division were Binupa Wijesinghe (77), Chamil Wickremasinghe (81), Shavindra Fonseka (85), Akhil Rao (81) Srinivas Rao (79), Nimal Wettimuni (80), Rohan J. Perera (81), Sam Gunaratne (83) Jhon Attygalle (82), Tony Moore (83), H. Yanagihara (82), Richard Abdeen (84), S. K. A. Hameed (80), Rolf Tibblin (83), Tyaeb Akberally (85) and D. Waqa (81). Veteran golfer Suwen Selvaranam displayed her skills to win the Ladies Division with a nett score of 76. Her daughter Thuhashani who flew over from Arisona led Sri Lanka to their championship title at the SAARC Golf Championship 2005 this week. So it was double celebrations for the mother and daughter. Niloo Jayatillake finished runner up with 78 nett though finishing second best hero, considering her earlier performances, she looks set to win the ladies title at the grand prix. Manori Jayakoddy of Hyundai Motor Company and Roshni Sangani tied up for the third place with 80 each and not far was Anusha Senadeera with 81 nett. The Junior Division title went to fifteen year old Chamil Wickremasinghe who made 81 nett and Shavindra Fonseka finished runner-up with 85 nett. |
