Over 20% of fishing craft replaced by Elmo Leonard Of 17,900 of Sri Lanka's fishing craft destroyed by the tsunami at end-December, 3,100 fishing craft of assorted sizes have been replaced, according to official statistics of the Ministry of Fisheries. Specific information of the number of fishing craft replaced following the tsunami is not available due to the distribution of new fishing craft undertaken "without going through the Ministry of Fisheries," Director General of the Department of Fisheries, G Piyasena said. Before the tsunami Sri Lanka had 1,500 multiday fishing craft, most - 34 to 54 foot in length, of which 180 were destroyed, according to Fisheries Ministry statistics. The average price of a local multiday fishing is Rs. 6 million. Before the tsunami the island also counted 370, day-boats with inboard motor engines, the average price of such a craft being Rs 2.5 million. Also on Sri Lanka's fleet were 4,400 fibreglass boats, 17 to 23 foot in length at an averaged cost of Rs. 400,000. There were also 12,000 traditional craft. |
