St. Joseph's, Ladies College emerge champs by Leslie Fernando St. Joseph's College oarsmen and Ladies College oarswomen rowed with authority and showed their prowess to emerge overall boys and girls under-19 champions respectively at the four-day Joes' Age Group Sculling Championship organised by St. Joseph's College and held on the Beira Waters of the Colombo Rowing Club yesterday. Josephians collected 32 points and Ladies College 27 points. Joes won the boys under-19 single scull and double scull. Bassim Hassan, the Josephian sculler, who rowed with success to win the single scull, went on to win the double scull partnering Hemal Silva. Ladies College proved their class to win the girls under-19 single scull and the double scull. Shiyani Welikala and Anya Ratnayake performed best for Ladies College. Josephians and Ladies College were presented the Rev. (Dr.) D. B. Stanley Abeysekera challenge trophies. In the boys and girls under-17 overall championships, Royal College with 20 points and Madras Boat Club with 16 points became champions respectively. For visiting Madras Boat Club, 11-year-old Fazila Husain, performed well winning the girls under-13 and under-15 single scull events. Deva Henry, President of Amateur Rowing Association of Sri Lanka, was the chief guest. |
