PC House to lift Isipathana rugby by Srian Obeyesekere A fallen Isipathana will be recharged by a Rs.250,000 sponsorship in the once schools' rugby kings bid to put behind a near 3-year hiatus of reclaiming the crown. Perhaps, best accentuated in the words of the college Rugby Co-Ordinator, Ivor Keerthipala that 'form is temporary, but class is permanent.' Of course, Isipathana's looked to new fortunes in which Keerthipala, a die-hard rugby fanatic who has represented his 'alma mater' at junior level, breathed hope, took a journey down memory lane to some forty years back. From the current Chairman of the Isipathana Rugby OBA Committee, Cmdr. H. K. Sisira, SLN (Retd.), a former national player, whose record for the highest number of 25 tries during a school season added to that glory time, who touched on 'this crucial juncture in Isipathana's history,' to the college Principal P. Kuruppu who hoped the sponsorship from PC House would be a long term relationship. What should be a new curve in his ruggerites recapturing its glorious past. The occasion last Thursday at PC House (Pvt.) Ltd., one of the country's leading IT companies, brought together both Isipathana past and present. Such former greats like Hisham Abdeen - the current college rugby coach with a chequered national career remembered for captainining a Sri Lanka side that consisted of ten Isipathanians, two of whom were schoolboys in 1987. Indeed, the occasion certainly stirred memories of what Isipathana, known as Greenlands College over the years as its current Principal recalled, had achieved on the rugby field. The deeds from which of course, current captain Nalin Liyanage and his charges could well take a leaf of inspiration if they are to come back from a dark cloud, the worst of which was losing on the trot last year. As the Chairman of PC House S. H. M. Rishan wished, the signing of the
sponsorship package between him and Cmdr. Sisira on behalf of Isipathana,
would be a fruitful kick-off where his company would support the Park Road
school in different areas such as modern training methods as well on the
road to a new morrow. |
