Death of sportsman Sarath Basnayake by S.M. Jiffrey Abdeen, Kandy Sports Corr. The death occurred of former St. Sylvester's College and Police sportsman Sarath Basnayake at the age of 60 and his funeral took place at the General Cemetery, Borella before a large crowd of friends, relations and sportsmen. Sarath Basnayake first played cricket for St. Sylvester's College in the early sixties as a fiery medium pacer and his best figures were 9 for 11 against Vidyartha College in their Big Match 'Battle of he Babes' and led his side to an innings win. He also had several outstanding bowling figures. He also represented the College soccer team as a full back and also in athletics. Well built Sarath Basnayake learnt his rugby at Kandy Sports Club in the mid sixties and played as a prop. He later played cricket for Saracens Cricket Club and subsequently joined the Police as a Sub Inspector and played rugby and cricket. He retired as a Chief Inspector of Police and took to Gemology where he prospered. It is said that fast bowlers hunt in pairs and his opening bowling partner and one time skipper in school Trevor Melder pre-deceased him a couple of months back in Australia. This pair of fast bowlers died a couple of months of each other but in two different continents. The way the path of life took them. |
