Chinese delegation to boost agriculture projects

A seven-member Chinese delegation led by Vice Director General of the Department of Agriculture of the Shandong Provincial Government recently visited Sri Lanka to explore the possibility of developing agriculture projects which included fertiliser manufacturing, assembly of agriculture machinery two-wheel/four-wheel tractors, crop cultivation and seed culture.

The delegation was welcomed at the BOI by the Deputy Director General (Promotion) who briefed them on the general investment climate of the country and in particular the opportunities in the agriculture sector. An official from the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock, Land and Irrigation was also present.

BOI facilitated the visit of the delegation by arranging meetings with leading players in the fields of agricultural machinery and fertiliser manufacture.

The possibility of supplying two-wheel and four-wheel tractors. Combine harvesters seeds etc, were discussed in detail.

DIMO, Hayleys, Freudenberg, A. Baurs and Co were some of the leading companies who met the Chinese counterparts.

The delegation also visited prospective factory sites.

Another area of interest was phosphate mining and discussions were held with the Chairman, Lanka Phosphate (Pvt) Ltd who explained in detail the geographic location of the phosphate reserve at Eppawala and discussed various aspects of the mining process, the existing regulatory framework and the need to establish a fertiliser manufacturing plant in Sri Lanka on a joint venture basis.

The visit of the delegation was a sequel to the BOI's discussions with the authorities of the Shandong Provincial Government and a signing of an MoU for the promotion of investment, trade and economic ties between the BOI and the Shandong Department of Foreign Trade and Economic Cooperation in October 2004.
