Lanka's gems dazzle Australians One-hundred-and-six members of the Gemmological Association of Australia (GAS) were in Sri Lanka where they held their 59th AGM, and annual conference, which followed. They were all familiar with Sri Lanka's renowned coloured gemstones, which they had been purchasing. But, they had not seen the island's gem pits. In Australia, it is river mining which brings out gemstones. The visitors were fascinated at the sight of the island's age-old methods of unearthing coloured precious stones and the traditional methods employed in cutting and polishing these objects. In Colombo, they also interacted with their counterparts in Sri Lanka and the local gem and jewellery trade. However, they largely shied away from the media to spend more time around gem pits. Global Holidays (Pvt) Ltd, the travel and leisure division of Hayleys group did all the ground work for their tour of the island. |
