Holcim Lanka to help overcome sand shortage by Elmo Leonard Holcim Lanka Ltd, one of the six cement manufacturers in the country has conceived an idea to help Sri Lanka overcome her acute shortage of sand, Holcim's managing director, Peter Spirig said answering media queries. Holcim, present in 70 countries and synonymous with cement has launched a fund to rebuild tsunami affected houses, schools and assist masons and carpenters who lost their houses and tools of labour within the country. The total funds collected so far is Rs 119 million with Rs 20 million contributed by local Holcim employees. Of 500 houses planned to be built with the money from the fund, 170 have been completed. Holcim has with full financial support and in cooperation with Sarvodaya built the following: Balapitiya 27 houses (Rs 8.1 million), Thelwatte 15 houses (Rs 4.5 million), Suduwella 20 houses (Rs 6 million), Kottegoda 12 houses (Rs 3.6 million), Amparai 50 houses (Rs 15 million), Batticaloa 22 houses (Rs 6.6 million), Trincomalee 37 houses (Rs 11 million), Jaffna 13 houses (Rs 3.9 million). Kalutara in collaboration with Ceylinco-Grameen 30 houses (Rs 10 million). Holcim had also provided tools for 175 masons in all affected areas, (Rs 1 million) and for Holcim employees in Galle, some of whom lost their houses - (Rs 3.7 million). Holcim has also provided cement and technical support and built the following: Unawatuna 30 houses (Rs 1 million), for distributors and dealers for all affected areas, houses and shops (Rs 2.7 million). In cooperation with UNESCO and bhikkhu, Ven Tissa, Kosgoda 50 houses (Rs
1.6 million), Sri Bodhiraja Foundation, Peraliya and others 300 houses (Rs
2.3 million), Swiss Govt agency Matara school buildings (Rs 10 million),
Reconstruire et Vivre in Habaraduwa 50 houses (Rs 770,000), CECB and
Sabaragamuwa PC, Hambantota 150 houses (Rs 1.6 million), Construction skills
training for masons in all affected areas 240 trainees (Rs 1.6 million). |
