Function 1 : New kids on the block by Mahes Perera
Led by the fast talking Ajith, Function I includes Damian, Harsha and DJ Clement of the Dam Jam DJ Crew. "What we are trying to do is to concentrate on hard core hip-hop with street rap included in our songs. All our creations are different from one another and we make sure that our lyrics, music styles and vocal styles are not similar with each song", says Ajith who has been working hard to get the group off the ground and into the regular performing arena. A product of St. Mary's College, Negombo, Ajith revels in hip-hop and rap and his idols are Ice Cube, Ludacris and Eminem. The group had a first outing at a talent contest held at the Millennium Park two years ago but unfortunately couldn't grab the trophy even though they made it to the semi-finals. But that did not pull them back, the guys were determined to work harder to reach their goal. That's when Nylon Girl was released and now Function I has a follow up single called Free Style Lodge. "The song is currently played online and on the air by the radio stations. It's a free style battle of words and it is interesting. Our music tracks are handled by Christo Pieris and Anton Fernando and we hope to release another single with Sinhala lyrics and Sri Lankan music rhythms. We listen a lot to hip-hop, blues and r & b to draw out ideas and we hope that in the near future we can release a CD which is our ambition now. We have a website www.function-1.com and we are looking for other new talent to help promote them with performances," concludes Ajith. Adventurous in spirit, Function I has a lot going for them. Their hip-hop grooves tell a tale without missing a beat. Their dedication to hard core saw them perform with ease at the four Reach Out concerts held this year as the youth musicians' fund raisers for tsunami victims. Soon there is going to be a hip-hop get together at which Function I will be spreading their vibes with DJ Clement in swinging form, giving his soul mates that extra thrust with his slick cuing, mixing and scratching. Watch out for the date! |
