President will not give into threats by our political correspondent President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga told the delegation of Maha Nayake Theras who met her at her invitation at the President's House Friday that she was ready to seek their advice but she would not give into threats and intimidation of a few extremist elements. "No ruler in the entire history of the island was pressurised to change state policy by a Buddhist monk with a threat to fast unto death", she said. The government's program for rehabilitation of the tsunami-affected regions in the North East is not secret and several programs will be implemented soon to inform the public about it, she added. "The proposed tsunami relief structure is merely an administrative body and not a political one. The relevant document would be signed by a Secretary to a Ministry and as such it would not divide the country or infringe the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the country," she explained. In such a context it is regrettable that certain media institutions are provoking religious disharmony and clashes, she further told the Venerable Maha Nayake Theras. She warned them of the danger arising from people with ulterior motives who are waiting eagerly to provoke the people by carrying coffins throughout the length and breadth of the country. "Whose interests do they serve?" she queried. She appealed to the people to act wisely without falling prey to the machinations of certain Opposition politicians. |
