China ready to facilitate peace K.Paranawithana and M.P. Muttiah reporting from Beijing Chinese Assistant Foreign Minister Shen Guofeng told a group of South Asian journalists who were visiting China at the invitation of the Chinese Foreign Ministry that his country was prepared to facilitate peace talks between the Sri Lankan government and the LTTE, if invited. During a discussion held at the Chinese Foreign Ministry Shen Guofeng said that international support for peace efforts was needed to solve the ethnic conflict in Sri Lanka. He said relations between China and Sri Lanka were developing well, and the Chinese side always supported peace in the island. The Chinese Assistant Minister said that his country has always paid greater importance to the relations with developing countries, especially in the South Asian region. Guofeng said that strategic partnership between India and China had considerably grown during the past few years. Both countries were cooperating at the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO). He said that India could play a vital role in the United Nations. The reformation of Security Council should include veto powers to the would-be permanent members of the Council. He pointed out that any reform of the Security Council and the other bodies of the UN should be conducive to developing countries and equality should be maintained. Referring to Taiwan, Shen Guofeng said it was a threat to the Asia Pacific countries. The proposal was to reunify the island with the mainland according to one-China and two-systems policy. There could be no room for separation. The One China policy would be beneficial for the people of China and Taiwan. Fifteen journalists from India, Nepal, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka attended the discussion. |
