Soldier, EPDP member killed

One soldier and an EPDP activist were killed yesterday in a claymore mine explosion allegedly carried out by the LTTE in front of an EPDP Office in Vavuniya.

"An improved version of a claymore mine has been detonated by a remote control device from a distance killing a soldier and a EPDP activist," an Army officer told the Sunday Observer.

One soldier and five EPDP activists were wounded in the incident and were admitted to the Vavuniya Hospital. They were later transferred to the Anuradhapura Hospital.

The officer said the LTTE could be behind the attack, however adding that no arrests had been made.

The attacked EPDP office is located at Kurumankadu, 1 1/2 km from the Vavuniya town on the Mannar road, is one of several political offices run by the Eelam People's Democratic Party (EPDP) in Vavuniya.
