by Lal Gunasekera

The Public Schools' Wanderers, due here shortly on a four-game rugby tour, include Steve White-Cooper (Harlequins), who has represented England, and two others (Richard Smith and Neil Watkins), who represented Wales.

White-Cooper is the Captain of the touring party with Smith as Vice-Captain.

The 25-member squad comprises 22 players and three officials - Brigadier Ralph James as Manager, Gavin Holmes as Assistant Manager and Andrew Rance as the physiotherapist.

The Public Schools' Wanderers Club was formed in 1940 and provides teams to play in developing rugby countries, as well as playing international fixtures in Belgium, Germany, The Netherlands, Italy, South Korea, Kenya and New Zealand. Since its inception over 2000 players have represented the Wanderers in over 5,000 matches.

The Wanderers have also toured East Africa, South Africa, USA, Canada, Bermuda, Uruguay and most European countries. They even took over the British Lions' cancelled fixtures in Zimbabwe in 1982.

They have been finalists on two occasions at the Middlesex 7's, represented England at the Monte Carlo 7's in 1987, 1988 and 1989, (won in 1989), finalists at the 1988 Hong Kong 7's after beating New Zealand in the semi-finals (they lost to Australia in the final), won the London 7's as well as the African Safari 7's in 1996.

The 22 players in the tour party are Ryan O'Neil, Nick Baxter, Andrew Harrison, Kevin Brennan, Tom Tombleson, Mathew Oliver, George Dixon, Rees Edwards, Duncan Murray, Richard Smith, James Campbell, Andrew Gatworthy, Lee May, Daniel Look, Chris Mall, Steve Martin, Kevin Burke, Neil Watkins, Jim Jenner, Chris Evans, Steve White-Cooper and Simon Granger.

They play their first game on June 14 (Tuesday) against the Western Province RFU at Longden Place, followed on June 16 against SLRFU President's XV at Maitland Crescent, June 19 versus Central Province Invitation XV at Nittawela and against the Combined Defence Services on June 22 at Galle Face.
