Royal takes centenary Oars trophy by Leslie Fernando Royal College crew composed of A. Jayathileka, J. de Silva, P. de Silva, M. Jayasinghe and L. Wickremanayake proved their class to win the Men's Four event defeating traditional rivals S. Thomas' College at the South West Monsoon Regatta held on the Beira waters of the Colombo Rowing Club yesterday. Royalist oarsmen timed 4.18 secs to take the Centenary Trophy ousting the Thomian crew of R. Wickremasekera, M. Niroshan, D. Peiris, M. Kulugammane and Y. Salgadoe, who clocked 4.32 secs. The men's pair event was won by Chanka Talpahewa and V. G. N. Santha of Colombo Rowing Club beating the clubs 'B' pair D. M. Nanayakkara and Heshan Henry with a time of 4.01 secs. The men's intermediate sculls event was won by the Josephian Baasim Hassan who beat W. S. Wimaladasa of Sri Lanka Navy with a time of 4.18 secs. The Ladies Junior Four Trophy was won by Ladies College 'A' beating their 'B' side with a time of 4.59 secs. Ladies 'A' team was represented by Shayari de Silva, Gabrielle Mohamed, Varunika Samarasinghe, Gayani Boteju and Minuri Amarasuriya. The Ladies College 'B' team comprised Shirell Hallock, Denise Koch, Talani Perera, Tarea Navaratne, Shadeena Mendis. Anya Ratnayake, Ahmed Aslam, Mahangu Weerasinghe, Shadeena Mendis, Sharen Kannangara of CRC 'A' beat Thilan Jayatileka, Pemindi Gamage, Indunil Perera, Mahil Gamage and Eraj Fernando of CRC 'B' (time 4. 18 secs). Dr. Ray Wijewardena, Chancellor, University of Moratuwa, was the chief guest. |
