Police ready to counter violence by Jayampathy Jayasinghe Police is prepared to deal with any lawlessness in the country and will take appropriate measures based on intelligence to counter violence and damage to public and private property, Inspector General of Police (IGP) Chandra Fernando told the Sunday Observer. He said security in and around Colombo and in the provinces has been strengthened following violent demonstrations during the last few days. DIG Colombo Pujitha Jayasundera said security around the Norwegian Embassy was tightened following reports that some demonstrators were planning to stage a protest at the embassy after the signing of the Post-Tsunami Operational Management Structure (P-TOMS) agreement. As there were no demonstrations police strength was withdrawn. The DIG said that around 2000 policemen will be deployed in the Colombo city within the next few days to maintain law and order and to protect public and private property. Referring to Fridays demonstration by the Janatha Vimukthi Peremuna (JVP) opposite Parliament at Sri Jayawardenapura, he said only tear gas was used to disperse the crowd. No person with injuries was admitted to any hospital. |
