Continuous TU action if Sathosa is not taken over

Employees of Sathosa Retail Ltd (SRL) will resort to continuous trade union action in the event the government does not take action to take over SRL and ensure continuity of employment.

"We have informed the Sathosa Chairman Mahinda Gammanpila that in the absence of a proper plan to take over SRL by the government and ensure continuity of employment by July 10 that we will resort to continuous trade union action," a member of the Inter Company Employees' Union SRL branch, said. According to sources the employees have still not been paid their June salaries. The management of Sathosa retail Ltd sold the remaining stock at the 143 retail outlets at 50% less to meet the Rs 28 million salary bill for May.

This situation was spotlighted in one of our earlier reports about SRL. The final report of the 10-member committee on the possible take over of Sathosa Retail Ltd (SRL) was handed over to the Minister of Trade, Commerce and Consumer Affairs Jeyaraj Fernandopulle on June 16.
