Tharuna Aruna to provide 2,000 graduate placements

Minister of Skills Development, Vocational and Technical education Piyasena Gamage said that the Government has provided employment to 42,000 unemployed graduates and this is considered the largest single intake. The Government has to now consider the employment issues of over 14,000 graduates who are passing out every year. He said that the numbers will further increase with the expansion of the University system in the country.

The Minister said that he has requested the Board of the Tharuna Aruna Institute to continue the good work done so far to serve the youth of the country. The initiative to set up regional offices in every province will further strengthen the capacity of the program to reach the desired goal of providing placements to 2,000 graduates annually, islandwide.

He appealed to the Chambers and their associates to help in the effort and thanked them for their commitment.

The Aruna II Program is a Government/Chamber initiative funded by The World Bank and the Government of Sri Lanka. The primary goal of the program is to re-orient unemployed graduates' career aspirations towards the private sector.

The program aims to provide placements to 10,000 graduates to increase their employability in the private sector during the program period of five years.

The period of work experience and training is for a maximum of twelve months. It also plans to further strengthen the bond between the Sri Lankan graduates and the private sector and use talents and capabilities of graduates for the growth and development of the private sector. Mrs. Nirmali Samaratunga, Chairperson of the Tharuna Aruna Institute, Nawaz Rajabdeen, Chairman of the Federation of Chambers of Commerce and Industry of Sri Lanka Ranjith Hettiarachchy, Director of the Board of Tharuna Aruna and Sam Stembo, Chief Executive Officer also addressed the gathering.
