Kinduru Adaviya :

Unexpected turns in life

by Lakmal Welabada

Semini Iddamalgoda and Meena Kumari in a scene from Kinduru Adaviya (Mermaids’ kingdom)

Savithri is a young executive in a private bank, Colombo who hails from a rich family. Her father Vipula, is a custom officer and a high caste wealthy land owner. Savithri falls in love with Rohan, a handsome young man from a rich jewellery business family. Getting the blessings of their parents, the two lovers exchange rings and get engaged.

Everything happens smoothly and in favour of Savithri and Rohan when an unexpected incident shakes their lives. Rohan's younger brother gets caught by the Sri Lankan Customs for smuggling gold. Though he has been involved in this illegal business for a long time, none of his family members knew about it. Rohan's parents seek help from Vipula, Savithri's father who is a high official in the Customs.

But law abiding Vipula, does not want to get involved. Rohan's parents do not allow Rohan to marry Savithri. But the two lovers are determine to tie the knot and go abroad. Savithri's parents and relatives arrange a quiet wedding ceremony at their place. Though Savithri awaits impatiently in her beautiful bridal, her husband-to-be, never turns up.

Susil Guneratne, actor, dramatist, tele-maker and a journalist.

The disheartened young woman swallows sleeping tablets and tries to kill herself. What has happened to Rohan? Will Savithri die? What is written in their destiny? You want to know....? Follow the tele story Kinduru Adaviya (Mermaids' kingdom) directed by Susil Guneratne on Rupavahini on every Monday at 7.30 pm.

Kinduru Adaviya is the third teledrama produced by Susil Guneratne, a versatile dramatist who has been an actor himself, a teledrama director and to his credit, a journalist too.

In Kinduru Adaviya, Susil touches the senses of the viewer by weaving the three emotions of humankind - love, hatred and patience in the love story of Savithri and Rohan, the present day Romeo and Juliet. Susil Guneratne does the role of the Inspector of Police in the tele while simultaneously directing his counterparts efficiently.

Though today, a popular tele director and actor on small screen, Susil started his debut as a performing artist in stage drama.

"My heart touched the stage when I was a student at Anuradhapura Madya Maha Vidyalaya," he reminisced.

"In 1976, just after a week of my A/L exam I got a letter from Dharmasiri Bandaranayake to take part in his stage drama, Eka Adipathi (He is the dictator)," he reminisced. Accepting this wonderful opportunity, young Susil left his hometown in Jayanthipura, Polonnaruwa and came to Colombo looking for green pastures.

His promising talent helped him secure work under veteran dramatists like Simon Nawagattegama and his stage drama, Sudu saha Kalu (Black and White) and Somalatha Subasinghe's Vikurthi (Deformity). The experience and the discipline he obtained from them helped him to continue a promising career in the field.

He won the Best Stage Actor Award at the Youth Council Stage Drama Festival of the year for his exquisite role in Yasaratne Ratnayaka's stage drama, Eureka in 1979.

He produced his first stage drama Numba witharak Thala Elalui (only yourself is good) in 1981, and won the Youth Council Best Drama Award. Muhunu Dekak (Two faces) and Sirakandawuru (Prisons) were his second and third productions. Pora Kukullu (Fighting cocks) will be his next stage drama which will be staged shortly.

Bertram Nihal introduced Susil to the tele world in his teledrama Suba Prarthana (Best Wishes). So far Susil has acted in nearly thirty teledramas, and acted many supporting roles in films under famous film directors.

Parevi Dhenuwa (Swan) and Sivusiya Gauwa were his own tele directions which won the silent appreciation of many tele viewers. His next production Ma Ruk Mal which is with the finishing touches will be telecast in the future.

Susil tries to highlight the common incidents in society and day-to-day incidents and characters into his teledramas in between the main stream of the story. And this has been the most unique feature in his creations.

"I really appreciate the encouragement that the Sri Lanka Rupavahini Corporation (SLRC) is giving us, the teledrama makers by buying the 'good' dramas without waiting, especially for sponsors, and maintaining the rule not to exceed more than 25 episodes when telecasting a teledrama. I hope that SLRC would continue this without political influence even in the future," he hopes.

Susil Guneratne, is one of the few not confined merely to one segment in the art field. He has been working as a print journalist at Lake House papers since 1978. Hence, he has been balancing his performing career with his writing career as well. "I have worked at Sarasaviya, Navayugaya and Dinamina. Though I am involved in my drama career, I have never gone on no-pay leave so far as I have a great regard for my job," he says humbly. Susil was appointed as the Deputy Editor of Sarasaviya (Cinema-weekly) in 1994 and became the Editor of the same paper in 2001. At present he is the Consultant Editor of Tharuni (Women's - weekly).

Susil says he has penned at least one line about almost every popular talent in the cinema and tele field. "I have helped many in that manner. As a journalist who loves the cinema and other performing arts I am very satisfied about it," he smiles.
