Asian Tracks

by Umangi de Mel

'Asian Avenue' comprises 11 tracks of which the majority are Tamil rap songs. It also has a blend of Sinhala and English music to give it the ideal balance.

The CD which are produced by the hit factory will be released in July under Sony BMG and M entertainment.

According to 22-year old Krishan Maheson his solo album features Ranga Dassanayake, Yohan Rajapakse, Iraj Weeraratne, Nisal Gangodage and Rukshan Mark of Charles Mark, some of the lyrics were by Amala Umapathysivam, Vasantha Dukgannarala, Kelum Shrimal, Ram Victor, while most written by me, says Krishan.

The long list of artistes involved, don't end there as Krishan goes on about the rest of the other contributors "BK (bonekiller), Infaz Noor-ud-din, Rukshan Mark, Bertram Charles, Yauwanan Wigneswaran, Nilukshi Jayaweerasingham, Ashanti Colombage, Gajan Maheson, Romesh and Lashan of Kandy contributed a lot while the website, CD cover and promotional stuff were done by Dinesh and Lance Muller.'

The audio CD will include the making of the album, three videos from the album together with the documentary on the album which is directed by Dinuksha Wattegama and Nilan Cooray. The album covers a variety of issues starting from war, youth motherhood, drugs and love.

Talking about the roots of his career as a musician, Krishan says that he was only 16 when he joined 'Urban Sounds' with his brother Gajan. Having done a lot of work with 'Urban Sounds', the guys won an award from the Asian Institute of Broadcasting Development for the best TV campaign on HIV awareness. "Our debut track with the band was called 'Smooth flow' and also did stuff like SL 2030.

Then my brother started working with B&S and our band took a break," he says. Yet, Krishna never took a break as an artiste, since he joined Iraj to produce the best of local R and B and hiphop. 'Roots', one of their innovative songs was played on BBC Radio and was featured on the UK-Asian charts.

Being on the same wave length, Krishan and Iraj got down to serious business as they introduced Tamil rap to Sri Lanka with tracks like J. Town Story' and 'Ran Ran Ran', 'I also worked with Ranidu and Iran on the song called 'Ninda Noyana Hendewe', 'Krishan adds.

Ambition has always been a launching pad for creativity and more so in young musicians who dish out cool innovations by the day. Being part of the whole thing the guys then desired to have a more stable outfit. As a result 'Ill Noise' was formed by Iraj with Krishan BK, and Infaz. "We created many tracks which later on turned into a CD called 'Iraj' which was a total success.

Fourteen thousand CDs were sold. Some of the tracks, like 'J-town' and Ran Ran Ran' will be released internationally through Universal music soon."

Krishan is also a member of 'diatribe' with BK, Bren aka GD and DJ Stalin. Talking about their experience together Krishan says they've had their ups and downs as a band but stock as a crew on stage, "We've had enough internal conflicts, but we've also had enormously successful concerts in Negombo, Kandy and Colombo.

There was a good response from youth and people really liked our music. He advices up and coming musicians to do their own thing and not benchmark other peoples' music. Krishan feels the need to bring more local flavoured music which at the same time is innovative and will hold the audience spellbound.
