Tough win for CR by Lal Gunasekera Table leaders CR & FC finally made it when they beat CH & FC by 20 points (1 goal, 2 tries, 1 penalty) to 7 (1 goal) after leading 8-0 at half time in their Caltex 'A' Division League Rugby Championship game at Maitland Crescent yesterday. The manner in which the red shirts achieved their win last evening was nothing much to crow about. They had lost their rhythm. Gone was the fluency of their previous wins, particularly against the Havelocks last week. Perhaps they are keeping their best for Saturday's key confrontation against the defending champions Kandy Sports Club. This was CR's seventh win at a trot. CH fought tooth and nail and were successful in restricting CR to only three tries and even scored a try - the second side to do so against CR this season so far. They best CR 10-3 at "The Crescent" last year in the second-round after CR had won the first game 32-5 at Longden Place. Even last evening, there was determination written on their faces, but just did not have that punch to pull through. They did their best, but Nalin Dissanayake must not try to kick away valuable possession in future. CR went ahead in the fifth minute with a Pushpakumara penalty from 25 metres, and with Wijeweera failing to make the equaliser for CH 15 minutes later, CR, went further ahead with skipper and flanker Pavithra Fernando slipping through off a line-out inside CH "22" on the left flank. Pushpakumara missed the conversion (CR 8-0). Pushpakumara missed a penalty too for CR in the 38th minute. After the "turn around", CR, went into a 13-0 lead in the 10th minute with Pavithra Fernando scoring his second try which Pushpakumara failed to convert. Three minutes later, Wijeweera, fluffed a penalty for CH, but CR's centre Rajith Jayasundera made a splendid break and slipped past CH's defence after CR had won a scrum on the left flank inside the "22". CH had a consolation with one of their players beating CR's Pushpakumara to the goal off a punt ahead in injury time and Nalin Dissanayake made certain of the extra points. Roshan Deen refereed. In the other game, Army were held to a 10-all draw by Navy at Welisara after the Navy led 5-0 at half time. Both teams scored two unconverted tries. Today, Havelocks meet Old Zahirians at Havelock Park. |
